Marriage Equality
03/18/2012
Mike Grigsby

Mike Grigsby, field organizer for Basic Rights Oregon speaks to us about the work of Basic Rights Oregon (BRO), and its program for marriage equality -- the freedom for an adult to marry whomever he/she chooses, regardless of gender. Mike addresses such questions as: What is the recent history of marriage equality in Oregon? Why was the decision made not to put it on the ballot at this time? What's happening in other states, and what impact does that have for Oregon? What do the terms civil union and domestic partnership mean, and how do they differ from marriage? What are the top 5 myths about marriage equality? How should we respond to those who use the bible to support the Defense of Marriage Act which defines marriage as the legal union of one man and one woman? BRO's mission is to ensure that all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Oregonians experience equality by building a broad and inclusive politically powerful movement, by shifting public opinion, and by achieving policy victories.

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Steinar Bryn from Lillehammer, Norway. Dr. Bryn is the leading architect of the Nansen Dialogue Network (NDN). Dr. Bryn’s dialogue and peace building work has been successful throughout the Balkans. Through the Nansen model of dialogue, deeply divided communities have worked to create co-existence and integration. The work has been so successful that the Nansen Dialogue Network (NDN) has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize 2012. This is the third time NDN is nominated for this prestigious prize. Colleague Dr. Amanda Feller from Tacoma, WA, who has worked with Dr. Bryn since 2004, will be in attendance and introduce Dr. Bryn. For more information on NDN please visit: peace.no/index.php

Racial Justice, Part 2

Jack Straton

Presentation by Jack Straton: "The Institutional-Racism Dogpile." Could racism be a doctrine or worldview (as capitalism is) rather than an individual dysfunction? This discussion tracks how any given incidence of prejudice gets reinforced by multiple layers of institutional power, just as multiple reflections in a laser cavity amplify the light from a single photon. Straton earned a degree in photography from the University of Oregon in 1977, worked as a professional jazz drummer for three years, and then returned to the U of O in the 1980s to earn a doctorate in quantum theory. Both as a volunteer and professional diversity trainer over the past 18 years, he has presented several hundred workshops on ending sexual assault and racism.

Dr. Duane Ray

This is Part 2 of a 5-part science series prepared by Dr. Duane Ray. "Science tells us that the world we perceive is only an approximation of our actual world. Join Dr. Ray as we glimpse our daily world as it really is. Space puckers. All is probabilities. Nothing is smooth. Everything comes in little chunks. Our TVs, our cell phones, and our computers would not be possible if we did not deeply understand the strange unfamiliar world which we inhabit. We continue to push back the limits of our understanding."
