Membership application or renewal

Humanism is a nontheistic philosophy which:

  • Affirms the inherent dignity and worth of every human being;
  • Encourages the use of science, reason, and free inquiry;
  • Promotes ethical principles and social compassion to enhance the quality of life.

Membership in Humanists of Greater Portland is open to anyone who agrees with its basic philosophy and who intends to provide the chapter with either financial or personal support in pursuing its purposes. Members who live within about an hour’s drive of Portland are eligible to vote in HGP elections, and serve as Board members (after a year) and Committee chairs, as outlined in our Bylaws.

While Lifetime Membership will not affect my pledge to remain supportive of the organization, it does mean that I prefer to remain on the rolls even if I miss some subsequent renewals. If the Board removes this designation for any reason (such as losing contact), or I do, my membership status will immediately revert to depending on my recent annual renewal.
